DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Illinois Traction was indeed unusual among American Interurbans. It was the largest Midwest electric line, and for 55 years served most all the major cities of agricultural central Illinois. It ran from St. Louis to Peoria, from Springfield to Danville, from Decatur to Bloomington and to Mackinaw, with numerous branch lines and city properties. It operated for most of its life with uniquely designed, massive, pre-World War I cars, yet for the last seven years of passenger service the newest and most modern streamline Interurban cars rode the rails. The Traction as it was called locally, operated both sleeping and parlor cars - and those longer than any other Interurban.
THE LINCOLN LAND TRACTION brings back the memories of this great Interurban through some 270 old photographs. The book portrays the Traction through its three major historical eras - those of the Green, Orange, and Blue cars - and as native Midwesterners saw them. It nostalgically brings back to memory the open-ended observation cars, the sleeping cars, the special trains, and of course the everyday operations of the handsomely designed passenger coaches.
