The purpose of this book is to give an overview of the "modern" steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, beginning with its pioneering demonstrator A-1 2-8-4 in 1925 and ending with the Nickel Plate Road's 2-8-4 No. 779 of 1949. Photos are an important part of this work, as an additional purpose is to provide good builder photos as well as action views of these great machines as they looked both new and in actual service on the railroads that bought and used them during the last great era of the steam locomotive.
The evolution of the steam locomotive in America has been a matter of intense research and writing, especially so in the last 40 years, as historians, railroad enthusiasts, and modelers have focused on these grand, impressive, and historically important machines after the end of their last active service on major railroads in 1960.
