Good public transport matters. It can offer a better environment, a stronger economy and greater freedom of mobility for everyone - and by combating congestion in urban areas and isolation in rural areas, it can make a direct contribution to the vitality of the whole society.
National and local authorities, the transport industry and transport users are all committed to creating public transport systems that people happily choose to use. The European Union is working to support them. We are helping transport planners and operators to exchange good ideas, compare their performance with others' and research new techniques - as well as reviewing legal frameworks to promote the development of public transport.
In all this, light rail has great potential.
Of course, it will never be the answer to every transport need - nothing is. But it really can come into its own in densely populated urban areas, or where there are high traffic flows from suburbs to city centres, by providing a very cost-effective way of serving existing markets and creating new ones. Light rail's high visibility, attractive public image, accessibility to people with mobility impairments, and the use of techniques like segregated lines and priority signalling at junctions are all assets in the effort to encourage the public to make greater use of public transport.
For all these reasons, I welcome the light rail renaissance in Europe. I am old enough to remember the last tram services in the UK - and delighted to be part of the movement to create their modern successors.
