The railroads played a key role in spreading people and progress across America's vast frontiers in the 1800s.
During the next century the railroads were the heart and soul of many towns and cities. They were the central element in many communities, transporting the necessary foods and goods, bringing lifeblood into the towns. They also created employment opportunities for many people along the railways both for the railroads and for the many supporting businesses, and provided affordable traveling opportunities for many Americans.
In Western New York, Salamanca was the hub of railroad activities with two large train yards - the Erie mainline from Chicago to New York and the Baltimore and Ohio running north and south.
The deep involvement the railroads had in the communities can best be demonstrated by looking at my own family. At one point in the 1960s, both of my grandfathers, four of my uncles and my father were all employed by the railroads in Salamanca.
Those who didn't work on the railroads, knew someone who did or worked in some position connected to the rails, whether it was serving the crews in local restaurants or delivering the mail carried in on the trains.
So it is very appropriate that in 1980 a group of Salamanca volunteers dedicated to renovate the former BR&P depot to create a lasting tribute to the role of the rails in the history of Salamanca. The Salamanca Rail Museum was the creation of that group opening in 1984.
Along with sharing some of the railroad history held in the museum's vast collection, a portion of the proceeds for this book will also benefit the museum.
I dedicate this book to the memories of my grandfathers; Theodore Burleson, a caller on the Erie, and John W Haley Sr., an Erie-Lackawanna and Conrail engineer.
As the country reaches new speeds on the information superhighway, there will always be preserved at the Salamanca Rail Museum the memories of hard working men who rode the rails, and those that still do.
