Life and Times of a Locomotive Engineer Southern Pacific Soft Cover Steffes
The Life and Times of a Locomotive Engineer Southern Pacific 1937-1976  By Charles Steffes 305 Pages Soft Cover .   Copyright 1992.
The autobiography of his life while working for the Southern Pacific Railroad in California from 1937 until his retirement in 1976 provides insight and humor in the railroad transition period from small steam locomotives to the giant powerful articulateds and early diesel engines.
In writing this account of my life working on the Southern Pacific railroad, I wish to thank those people who helped me so much, including J. W. Sulliven, Bill Coffelt, Elmer Fowler, Bruce Sprayberry, Fred Enloe, Mrs. J. S. Simpson, and many, many others, whose names would fill another book. I would also like to thank my wife and publisher, Darlene Steffes, who was the inspiration behind the book, and Bryan Aubrey, who edited the manuscript.
In writing, I did not give the exact time or day of many of the events, because they happened so many years ago. But the sequence of events down through the years is correct, and also the events are true.
The time I have written about is like a fluttering candle burning out and soon there will be nothing left but a wisp of smoke. And that too will disappear in the dusty, empty pages of history. So I hope this book will be somewhat of an epitaph for our times.
