Sleek compact high speed lightweight single end electric interurban cars, representatives of a type constructed only in limited numbers, staged their last dramatic stand on Lehigh Valley Transit Company's famed Liberty Bell Route, or Philadelphia Division, in eastern Pennsylvania. From 1939 until 1951 thirteen former Cincinnati and Lake Erie Railroad Company cars and one Indiana Railroad Company car, all adorned in a glistening picador cream and mountain ash scarlet paint scheme, streaked up hill and down dale through rolling "Pennsylvania Dutch" countryside and towns between Allentown and Union, or 69th Street, Terminal nestled in Philadelphia's western suburbs near city line. Lehigh Valley Transit Company acquired the modern cars during their extensive 1938-1940 modernization program, a program the magnitude of which only a few electric street railway systems ever successfully conducted.
This publication, the seventh produced by Lehigh Valley Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, Incorporated, presents the complete history and roster of Lehigh Valley Transit Company's 1000 Series interurban cars. A brief review of operations in Ohio and Indiana permit the presentation of their complete history from their inauguration of service in mid-west America to their demise in eastern Pennsylvania.
