INTRODUCTION:
During college, I desired some extra spending money, so I applied for a part-time job selling cameras at a local store. It was a great way to support a hobby while simultaneously earning a living. The part-time job became a full-time profession, which blossomed into a career in retail as I entered into store management after obtaining a BA in Business from Moravian College. Photography was always foremost in my life, combining the business side with the desire to sit trackside.
The Bethlehem station area is where the fascination with the Lehigh Valley Railroad began. Lehigh University campus was only a few blocks from the main line and within eyesight of the diamond crossing with the Reading and Jersey Central.
Soon, I developed a healthy friendship with many Lehigh Valley Railroad employees, specifically towermen. They provided me with accurate information that allowed me to obtain better photos of LV equipment. The array of locomotives covered a rainbow: reds, yellows, blacks, whites, and grays. Moreover, its assortment included mixtures from all three builders: Alco, EMD, and Baldwin.
In the 1960s, the Lehigh Valley Railroad struggled to survive the loss of the once-lucrative anthracite business and discontinuance of passenger service. The line turned to bridge traffic from Canada and expedited piggyback service from the west to save it. The LV continued to suffer from a declining capital investment of plant and equipment during the period, which continued the slide toward insolvency. However, the business earned a large following from the railfan community as one of the nation's most colorful railroads, which we will now explore.
