The Silverton Branch and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad was built in 1881-1882 and has been in continuous operation ever since. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is now owned by American Heritage Railway. The Railroad has been designated as both a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil engineering Landmark. It is the goal of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Museums to preserve and perpetuate this legacy.
