This is the second BRMNA work dealing with the works of the specific photographer and follows on from Cyril Littlebury's pioneering Canadian work in the 1920s and early 30s. "Stuck" was one of the best-known railway photographers in the steam era and this book traces his railroad photographic career from its first stumbling shots until he gave up in 1957 as steam disappeared. His carefully planned trips took him through Canada and the northern half of the U.S. He took excellent shots of Selkirks, Texas-types, Confederations, Big Boys, Challengers, Yellowstones, Alleghenies, Bullmooses, etc. and over 100 have been selected for this work. Each photograph is accompanied by extensive notes for which BRMNA has become famous.
FOREWORD
This is the second BRMNA work dealing with the works of a specific photographer and follows on from Cyril Littlebury's pioneering Canadian work in the 1920s and early 30s.
Lawrence Adne Stuckey - not many people knew what the initial "A" stood for - was one of Canada's best-known railway photographers. He began his photographic career in 1935 and remained active into the late 1990s, concentrating primarily on the Canadian Pacific system but also recording the Canadian National Railways, as well as lines in the northern United States in the immediate post-World War Two era. He thus captured the final years of steam in the US with wonderful shots of Alleghenies, Big Boys, Challengers and Cab Forwards, etc.
As was common in the earlier days of railway photography, when relatively few high-quality cameras were in use, Lawrence actively traded negatives and sold prints to collectors and amassed a large number of "correspondents" throughout North America. As a result, there are many collections containing Stuckey prints. He was also incredibly generous with his shots and, soon after BRMNA commenced its Canadian Pacific in the Rockies series, Lawrence wrote, sending photographs together with information on each one. Luckily for us, he was a confirmed diarist and kept extensive notes on a daily basis, as well as recording appropriate information on the shots he took. This has made preparing this book relatively easy, as his longtime friend Bill McGuire made Lawrence's notes available. Lawrence had given several of his personal photograph albums to Bill, together with his descriptions and we decided that we should publish this chronological work as a tribute to Lawrence's memory.
Lawrence was not only a Canadian Pacific Railway Locomotive Engineer but was also an accomplished amateur botanist, historian and horticulturalist and had an extensive stamp collection. When he died on June 13, 2001, his collection of over 2,000 negatives and 42,500 stamps was bequeathed to Brandon University.
