It was a symbol of the power and the romance of our railroads. It was one of those rare architectural masterpieces that are able to touch man's soul. Built as a landmark it was a monumental gateway meant to last through centuries. Yet Pennsylvania Station stood for little more than fifty years.
Today it is inconceivable that a building of such grandeur, a building that bore witness to so much of the nation's history, could be wiped away so capriciously. But when the Pennsylvania Railroad decided to destroy its beautiful station there was nothing to protect it; there was no law to prevent the destruction of our architectural treasures. It was not until most of Pennsylvania Station lay shattered in the Meadowlands of New Jersey that the Landmarks Preservation Commission in New York was given legal authority to act on its decisions. The great station that held the private histories of so many Americans had become our sacrificial lamb. It seemed that its death was necessary to make us realize what could be lost.
Pennsylvania Station has been gone from its for over twenty years. Since its demise we have weighed more carefully the remnants of our past. We have fought harder for the buildings that have shared the city with us, and we have measured their value in the ways they have enriched our lives.
The grand and noble station died a sad, inglorious death. time has come to offer a fitting epitaph from Thomas Wolfe's You Can't Come Home Again.
