The direct route from Paddington to Birmingham (Snow Hill) and Wolverhampton (Low level) through High Wycombe was completed as recently as 1910. Known as the 'cut-off' route, it enabled the GWR to compete on equal terms with the LNWR for the lucrative West Midlands traffic, removing the necessity for GWR trains to reach Birmingham via Oxford. The route witnessed some of its most impressive operations during the final years of Western Region steam, and from 1960. with the electrification of the Euston line in progress, the route saw its busiest period ever.
In Last Years of Steam: Paddington-Wolverhampton, Laurence Waters, author of Rail Centres: Oxford, recalls the heady days of the last 12 years of steam on the 'cut-off' route. Despite the emphasis on the latter years of steam, the earlier history and subsequent fate of the line are examined along with such important features of traffic as the iron ore generated by the Oxfordshire Ironstone Railway.
