In the sixty-five years since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington the country had become covered by a network of main and branch lines joining together most of the major towns and cities. Some companies such as the Great Western, the London and North Western, the Great Northern and about a dozen others were firmly established as important trunk routes, but there were also lesser companies whose ambitions extended beyond their immediate circumstances. Amongst these was the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, a company anxious to expand beyond the regions indicated in its title by building a main line southwards to London. The M.S. and L.R. had been formed in 1846 by the amalgamation of existing lines and proposed schemes providing altogether a line of route from Manchester to Grimsby. By branch lines and the acquisition of running powers over other lines the M.S. and L.R. managed to obtain its share in the transport of minerals and manufactured goods from the coalfields and industrial towns of the North Midlands. Directing the M.S. and L.R.'s affairs was Sir Edward Watkin, one of the most able railway politicians and administrators of the period. Besides being Chairman of the M.S. and L.R., Watkin served in a similar capacity on the boards of the Metropolitan and the South Eastern and Chatham. In view of these associations it is not surprising that the M.S. and L.R.'s scheme for a trunk route envisaged the possibility of linking up with the northward extension of the Metropolitan.
