The railways of the former Great Western hove long been a favourite with enthusiast and modeller alike, those in Oxfordshire being no exception. The county includes numerous picturesque branch lines, playing host to several main line routes as well. Steam was once a regular feature on the main lines to Worcester and Birmingham as well as those to Fairford and Thame. But the Great Western did not have the whole area to itself, for the L.M.S. had its own route to Oxford from Bletchley, and the former Great Central ran to Bonbury. Right up to the end of steam, locomotives from all four pre-nationalisation companies were regular visitors to the county, and drew enthusiasts from a wide area. Regular working ceased towards the end of 1966, although sporadic visits by steam engines continued for some months afterwards. Since that time the scene has changed considerably with many track and station alterations.
