Introduction
In presenting this the third album in The Last Days of Steam series I have once again embarked upon what is primarily a personal choice of photographs; yet it is one which I trust will have a wide ranging appeal.
Berkshire itself is perhaps a difficult county to portray with regard to its railways as, following boundary changes, Didcot and the lines to the west are now under the administrative control of Oxfordshire; although this was not the case during the period covered by the photographs. Again I have taken a liberal look at the county causing some slight duplication in areas associated with the previous volumes.
The photographs commence at Reading radiating out to the various main and branch lines. I hope most will be new to the reader as I am conscious that so often the same photograph is seen over and over again. Those that know me well will be aware I have a particular affinity for the D.N.& S. & Lambourn lines and so I make no excuses for including several photographs from these locations. These lines have a particular appeal simply because at a tender age I lived in a house backing onto the railway at Hermitage and was supposedly only quiet when a train went past the end of the garden . . . ! Later came hours spent by the lineside near Newbury Racecourse as a seemingly endless procession of 'Kings' and 'Castles' flashed through with sparkling paint, brass and copperwork glinting in the sunlight. My one regret is that I once turned down the opportunity of a trip on the Lambourn line and instead had to content myself with a walk over weed infested sleepers some years after closure.
In attempting to record the Last Days of Steam in Berkshire I have again been helped by many friends, old and new. Hugh Abbinnett, David Abbott, Brian Davis, Bob East of Newbury Station, John Fairman, Walter Gilburt and Tony Molyneaux all deserve a special mention for without their assistance none of this would have been possible.
