INTRODUCTION
During the early '50s, a time when families took sight of prosperity for tomorrow, hope for a better future could be seen on the far horizon for many. For the Nelson family, it was a beginning, a fresh start of things to come, and for little Joey Nelson it was one adventure after another. His dad worked nights for the railroad, which had their headquarters a few blocks away, under the big bridge linking our country with Canada. To Joey, the railroad was a means of travel during the summer months, and spending time away from work and responsibilities around the house, for the sunshine and miles of beach in Mississippi, along the Gulf of Mexico, where Joey and his family spent weeks with his grandparents and two aunts, a few blocks from the shoreline.
Time marched on as Joey saw things change around him; people and things taking on new and different views and aging. Living along the Detroit River in the midwest would never be the same.
Eventually, he and his family moved to the country, where he had new responsibilities. Time was taken away from summer vacations to help with the everyday care of life. Discouragement, disappointment, and sadness lay in wait at Joey's feet.
Joey felt loss in a personal way with the death of his Dad. An inward struggle boiled up inside of him. But the breaking point in Joey's life, he thought, came a few months later. He was hit by a speeding car in front of his house. The operation that followed and the long hospital stay drained his mind and body. Alone with his thoughts, he felt everything around him was empty, vain, and left no hope in this life to hold onto. The final nail to his mental casket was to be a last train ride south to Gulfport, Mississippi, which would come soon.
Joey heard from his two aunts in Gulfport. They told him the boarded up train depot would soon be leveled for a needed parking lot. The station that had expressed a time and place in history was now to be an ash heap.
Joey realized, from what his Dad had told him many times, that we have an obligation to future generations to share the good our country was founded upon. So he decided to take the train to Mississippi to the depot auction, for a last chance to see the station that for years had reached out to thousands as they arrived and departed. The depot had been built years ago as a lighthouse, and if her light could only guide Joey safely home, it was worth it to make a last stand.
Joey raised the needed money to take the train south to the auction, but his trip was interrupted when a tall, good looking fellow took time out of his busy day to introduce Joey to this friend, "who cares for your soul." Joey met God in a personal way, and now his journey takes on whatever challenges await him. Lost relatives, friends, and neighbors need to know his God is alive and well. For it does matter what you believe, what church you belong to, which Bible you study to show you God's way for salvation.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, (1 Tim. 1:15) YOU!
