ON THE BACK COVER
The history of America's railroads rolls along tracks laid up and down steep grades, across rivers and through backwater towns. The history is told by the engineers, firemen, dispatchers and other workers and passengers of smaller railroads connected to larger ones. The history of a railroad is found in its construction, its shops and yards, the timetables, its engines and cars, miscalculations and major accidents, the shipment of crops and transport of Union and Confederate troops.
The history of the Memphis Line is in the blood of author Dennis Mize. As a small boy during the 1950s, Mize visited the Auburn, Kentucky, depot where his grandfather was station agent. He listened to the open railroad telephone circuit, and watched as train orders were hooked up to the passing trains traveling between Memphis, Tennessee, and Bowling Green, Kentucky. And in the 1960s, he watched as the railroad was downgraded from a main line to branch status. He watched the locals and extra freights pass by and learned about the final runs of the Pan American and the night trains. He witnessed Operation Detour, saw the Paradise coal trains, and the eventual sale or abandonment of all the track north of McKenzie, Tennessee.
