INTRODUCTION
When the railways were in their infancy in Europe, Joseph Anton von Maffei resolved that the Kingdom of Bavaria should have a locomotive factory. For this purpose, he bought a hammer forge, the "Lindauer'sche Hammer", located north of the Munich city boundaries, from the Widow Franziska Lindauer.
The exact founding date of the J.A. Maffei company, the older of the two forerunners of the Krauss-Maffei of today, is a matter of conjecture. J.A. von Maffei delivered his 500th locomotive in 1864 and simultaneously celebrated the company's 25th jubilee, making the founding year 1839. On the other hand, the 100th jubilee of Krauss-Maffei was celebrated in 1937. It is an indisputable fact that the purchase agreement for the "Lindauer'sche Hammer" was dated March 20, 1838. 1837 was the founding year of the Munich-Augsburg Railway. It is probable that Maffei was already then making plans to build locomotives and had started negotiations with the Widow Lindauer, although the sale was only finalized in 1838. The purchase agreement specifies January 29, 1838 as the date on which Maffei would take possession of the hammer forge. "From this day onwards, the buyer operates the business on his own account, and from this day he is responsible for all interest on capital, and for state, house and municipal taxes."
As locomotive builders, Maffei and, after 1866, Krauss were dependent on business from state and municipal authorities. But from the beginning they were compelled, like Krauss-Maffei after the merger of 1931, to tide the company over the periods when orders from the public sector were not forthcoming. Therefore, finding and retaining customers from commerce and industry was always vital to Krauss-Maffei. Maffei and Krauss were never exclusively locomotive builders, just as Krauss-Maffei has never been only a tank builder.
This brochure documents the contribution that Maffei, Krauss and Krauss-Maffei have made over the years to the goal of progress through technology.
