THE INGREDIENTS of any bridge include common sense, a grasp of engineering principles, many hours of planning (financial as well as structural), perhaps an eye for beauty. Certainly in the case of the covered bridge as we know it in North America these requisites are present, plus an extraordinary degree of craftsmanship.
Hence the timber bridge has a widening appeal today: to the enthusiast and "collector," to the amateur (and sometimes the professional) engineer and architect, to the artist and to the tourist. To all of these a roofed span appeals to the historian who lurks, I suspect, in all of us: for the covered bridge-a large and sometimes engagingly gawky relic of the last century-gives a glimpse into the past, tells us a little bit more about how our forefathers lived and what they thought about.
So the purpose of Kissing Bridges is to salute the more than 1500 covered bridges still standing on this continent, to help locate them, and to tell and to show something about how covered bridges were built-and when and why.
There is nothing "new" here. All the material has been mined from the researches of more scholarly bridge buffs than I. To these real students, several of whom are mentioned under "If You Want to Dig Deeper" in the back of this book, the author wishes to express a debt of gratitude. I am especially beholden to the prime authority in this field, Richard Sanders Allen, for massive help with facts and illustrations. Most of the pictorial material here is from his collections.

All pictures are of the actual item.  If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.  Please email with questions.
