Darius and Tabitha Kinsey spent most of a lifetime in photography. The surviving negativeson glass plates and filmnumber some 4,500 in eleven formats.
These two initial volumes deal with the evolution of Darius' photography, with attention to the elements surrounding that evolution. For examplehe was making a living, and without Tabitha in the darkroom he could not have managed the amount of work he did. And because of Tabitha's ever-increasing skill at development by inspection, the great vision came through undamaged. Not that such conclusions were sought. They came as a result of interviews and contributions obtained during research, and a thorough knowledge of what is contained in the 4,500 negatives all of them.
Thus, share if you will a journey through two lives in photography, from the Family Album through the gigantic work of the 1910's and 1920's. As for clues to the three hundred and five pages which follow, consider: The work is grouped into sections which reflect divisions strongly represented throughout the Collection; the work is arranged essentially chronologically and Volume One terminates at the end of 1906, when the Kinseys moved from Sedro-Woolley to Seattle; the photographs in Volume One are printed from glass negatives, and are reproduced (peripheral material also) same size; photographs in Volume Two are reduced from 11x14" film negatives, and exceptions in either volume are noted with the item, as are specific acknowledgments; Dorothea's contribution appears in Volume One, starting on page seventeen; Darius, Jr. holds forth in Volume Two, along with the essay on the Kinseys, notes and bibliography, general acknowledgments, and colophon.

Volume Two The Magnificent Years
Contents
The photographs in Volume Two are from the very end of the Sedro-Woolley decade, and cover the Seattle years 1907-1940. All of them were taken with Darius' big camerathe 11x14" Empire State. Darius Junior's reminiscences start on page 181, the essay on Darius and Tabitha on page 299, followed by notes and references on pages 312 and 314. The story of the Collection begins on page 315.
