Preface to the Second Edition
NEARLY 20 YEARS have passed since the first edition of this little book appeared and it is remarkable and a little sad to realise how completely the picture has changed in the meantime. I still live within sight and sound of the original main line of the G.W.R., and my monthly mileage on Western Region trains usually runs into four figures; but apart from occasional excursions by the privately-owned Pendennis Castle and Clun Castle the saga of the Great Western four-cylinder 4-6-0 working has ended.
It is, nevertheless, no story of outdated engines fading away that fills the years from 1949 to 1960. During that time Castles and Kings did some of the finest work of their entire lives, and three additional chapters have been necessary to complete the story. Much of it is written from first-hand experience: on the footplate, in the dynamometer car, and on the stationary testing plant. I am most grateful to the various officers of British Railways, Western Region who have accorded me so many privileges, and must mention particularly the late R. A. Smeddle, K. J. Cook, W. N. Pellow and H. E. A. White. Nor must I forget that great personality and splendid engineer S. 0. Ell, who had charge of locomotive testing at Swindon. To travel with him was always an education.
