INTRODUCTION
Everything about the Pennsylvania Railroad was massive - its traffic, revenues, mileage, and its fleet of equipment. Some authorities have claimed that an all-time locomotive roster of the P.R.R. would list nearly twenty-five thousand engines. The 1924 inventory included 3335 locomotives of one type alone, the 2-8-0.
Because of the quantity and complexity of the Pennsy's motive power records, only bits and pieces have been organized for publication in the past. Numerous books and articles have been printed on the development of this railroad's locomotives, and many references are listed in the bibliography at the end of this volume. But few attempts have been made to list large groups of P.R.R. power.
This volume presents a complete record of all steam locomotives built during the last fifty years of Pennsylvania operation, which ended in 1957. During this period, all the heavier and more modern classes of PRR power were developed, including the H8, H9 and H10 Consolidations, the E6 Atlantics, all the Pacifics, and dozens of other classes, accounting for a total of 5075 locomotives. Also recorded are the histories of 450 electric locomotives, all that were ever operated on the pre-merger Pennsylvania. The numerical index of locomotives is an all-time listing of PRR power going back to the very first numbers used in 1857. Finally, there is a list of engines built at the Juniata Works in Altoona since 1906.
