FRONT COVER
Faux real? Yes. The PRR certainly offered jobs and financial independence to many European immigrants who, in search of the American dream, found work on the largest and most successful railroad in the United States.
While approaching the Statue of Liberty by ferry this past September, I was surprised that the tablet that Liberty holds in her left hand is keystone shaped. A little Photoshop work, and voila, April Fool!
The inscription on the tablet actually reads "July IV, MDCCLXXVI," the date that the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Emma Lazarus' famous poem about welcoming immigrants, which begins "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." is inscribed on a bronze tablet that hangs inside the statue's pedestal. (Chuck Blardone photo)
REAR COVER
A circa 1950's PRR travel poster, beckoning the public to come to New York City.
