The man behind the projectlater called the Key Systemwas colorful capitalist Francis Marion (Borax) Smith, who spent millions and attracted millions more from investors. But by the time the Key Route was a well-established empire of trains and ferries and an essential part of the East Bay's transportation system, its promoters were broke.
Although the company battled the rise of the private automobile with streamlined orange and silver trains running over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, decentralization, encouraged by freeways and bridges, doomed the rail system.
This book is in two parts. The first volume in the set is a detailed history of the East Bay-San Francisco trains, ferries and buses and is illustrated with more than 200 historic photographs, most of them rare and previously unpublished. Detailed route and track maps are included.
This volume, part two, tells how the railroad operated, covers the shops, interlocking towers, power system, signals and terminals, and documents all of the trans-bay rail rolling stock. It has over 250 photographs and illustrations, plus official scale drawings of cars, and the bibliography and index for both parts.
