ON THE BACK COVER:
The Kansas Central Railway was one of America's pioneer narrow (three-foot) gauge railroads, started in 1871 and extending westward from the Missouri River at Leavenworth, Kansas. The company's earliest years coincided with "narrow gauge fever," an enthusiasm fueled by many claimed advantages of railroads with less than the usual distance between the rails. This "slim princess" of the prairies operated as both an independent carrier and, ultimately, as a branch line of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Kansas Central, by 1882, had reached Miltonvale, Kansas, 166 miles from Leavenworth. However, by then the claimed advantages of the narrow gauge had proved illusory and the KC converted to "standard gauge" eight years later. Now, Kansas Central Narrow Gauge skillfully recounts the story of the bold dreams and economic folly which brought slim gauge railroading to the plains of northeast Kansas.
