INTRODUCTION:
WHO WILL REMEMBER US? Seen here with RV No. 14 at the Lehigh Valley Railroad interchange in Roselle Park on December 9, 1943 are, from left to right, Frank Froat, engineer; Tom "Happy" Mangini, fireman; an unknown brakeman; George Davis, brakeman; and Harry Williamson, conductor. These five men exemplified the typical five-man Rahway Valley crew: one engineer, one fireman, one conductor, and two brakemen. This crew would handle all the work that needed to be done six days a week (the RV did not operate on Sundays). Some days would be a typical eight-hour day; others could last upwards of twelve or sixteen hours. Only very rarely did RV President & General Manager George A. Clark put on a second crew. Clark generally believed in "leaving the boys alone - they know their jobs. I don't have to tell them that our only scheduled train leaves here at 8:30 on the button. I don't have to tell them we keep working until everything is finished. They know these things." Local residents still recall the wail of an RV steam locomotive whistle at late hours of the night. So who will remember these men and women, their hard work, and their countless hours of dedication to this little railroad? This book is an attempt to do just that. (Jeff Jargosch collection)
