Before the advent of railroads, travel and the transportation of goods meant long journeys in stagecoaches or watercraft, often subject to the vagaries of wind and weather. The 183os saw the first small step in revolutionizing transportation in Florida. But it would be another fifty years before these fragile lines blossomed into a fully fledged system, in no small part due to large investments by Henry Flagler, who developed the state's eastern seaboard, as did Henry Plant in the central and western portions of the state.
By the 1.89os, Florida could boast a vast railway system that connected every important city and Town, conquered the peninsula's vast and seemingly impenetrable interior, ushered in untold numbers of settlers and tourists, and conveyed to marketfaster than any previous means of transportationthe myriad products of Florida's mines, forests, factories, farms, and groves.
