INTRODUCTION
Most people tend to view the years of their young adulthood as special years and railfans are no exception. Every buff thinks his years were the best for photography. In spite of this, when I look at the overall history of railroads and the development of cameras and film, I truly believe that my years, the nineteen fifties and sixties, were the golden years for being a railfan. The variety of motive power, steam, diesel and electric, we had to photograph caused us consternation. When we had a beautiful day we didn't know where to go first. The kaleidoscope of color schemes just screamed photograph me. The hustle and bustle of many and varied terminals dispatching a plethora of limiteds to a myriad of farflung destinations gave the railfan the feeling of being a witness to matters of great moment. This motivated us to brave heat and cold, for we felt a social duty to record these matters of moment for future generations.
The Central Railroad of New Jersey was always a favorite railroad of mine. Its operation was easier to capture on film than big roads like the Penn. and the Central, yet it was not so small that it lacked photographic variety. It was possible in the time of a normal length slide show to encompass the total operation. The supply of equipment meant that no two slides had to have identical subject matter. This, combined with the fact that part of its operation was about to disappear, gave me the right amount of impetus to go out and cover Jersey City before the final curtain.
For the ease of the reader, I have prepared each photo caption so that it stands alone, but can be read from first to last as a continuous text with pictures.
