Since the 1630s the Hudson River waterfront has been the focal point for the area's development. By the mid 1830s, the Morris canal had reached the Jersey City basin just as tracks were being laid through Bergen Hill by the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Company in unison with the Paterson and Hudson Railroad. The route to the Hudson River would bisect Jersey City making it the transportation hub of the region.
For the next hundred plus years the Jersey City waterfront would expand into a mega mover of freight and people. The Port of New York and New Jersey would grow with the success of Jersey City's role as leader of commerce on the Hudson River.
At the center of this great expansion was the Pennsylvania Railroad with its Harsimus Cove and Greenville Yards along with its Exchange Place Passenger Station; all played a part in making the region around the Hudson River what it has become today.
