In the 1890s, the Jersey Central was a blue-chip railroad even a "Morgan road" like NYC, GN, NP, or C&O (elite roads under the control and watchful eye of Wall Street scion J.P. Morgan). Thanks to never-ending coal traffic destined for the furnaces of the metropolitan New York area, the CRR of NJ equaled "investment quality." World War I was its apex, however, and following a familiar path, the BIG Little Railroad's fortunes began a collapse from which there was no recovery. Punctuated by bankruptcy during The Great Depression, the 1949 reorganization was not sufficient for turning the tide, nor was the dieselization that followed. By the late 1950s-early 1960s, the road's future was so precarious that only annual sales of superfluous New York harbor real estate kept the its head above water.
