In this book, we'll study the operation of the Jersey Central Lines in Pennsylvania from the end of steam to the early Conrail era.
The beginning of the Jersey Central Railroad in Pennsylvania can be traced back to March 13, 1837. The Pennsylvania Legislature passed an act authorizing the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company to construct the Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroad as a portage from Pennsylvania Canal's North Branch at Wilkes-Barre through Ashley and over Penobscot Mountain via Solomon's Gap to the Lehigh Canal at White Haven. Three double-tracked planes were built as a freight and passenger carrier between Ashley and Solomons Gap in 1841.
Construction of the back track from Ashley to Solomons Gap, a distance of 13 miles, altered operations. This back track had a ruling grade of 1.8% from Ashley to Solomons Gap. Barney cars pushed only
freight and coal laden hopper cars up the Ashley Planes for the 21/2-mile ascent up Penobscot Mountain where steam locomotives took over for the trip from Penobscot to the Lehigh River Valley at White Haven. The steam engines were used to pull the empty cars to Ashley via the back track. This method of transporting coal out of Ashley remained until 1947 when diesel locomotives proved they could haul coal from Ashley to Solomons Gap via the back track.
