By virtue of its location on the Atlantic Coast, New Jersey has served as a transportation hub since its founding. First its harbors and rivers provided the explorers and settlers with safe locations to moor their sea going vessels and waterways on which to move goods and people. After permanent settlements were established along the water trails, and later roads, communication and commerce among the pioneers living in the New World were enabled. As the population moved west, goods imported through the ports along the Atlantic Ocean moved across New Jersey, first by wagon and later via canals and railroads. When farms were established and factories and mines opened in the western territories in the 1800s, products had to be moved east to reach their markets in population centers along the coast. New Jersey stood between the large city of New York and the sources of products in the west and became a major transportation corridor, a distinction the state continues to hold.
