Welcome to this first edition of Jane's Railway Year. In the pages which follow we portray in pictures the major news stories and developments affecting Britain's railways in 1981.
Observers of our constantly changing national railway scene can find around them a wealth of activity to absorb their interest, as a review of any year will show. A retrospective glance reveals that 1981 is no exception and our introductory commentaries to each of the sections listed opposite pick out the high (and low) spots during the enthusiast's year. These are, of course, featured in detail. At the same time we have endeavoured to bring to the reader's attention some of the apparently less significant events which nonetheless reflect the nature of both the national system and private railways during the period under review.
Our picture report on British Rail during 1981 places particular emphasis on the changing structure and deployment of the locomotive and rolling stock fleet. However, we also focus attention on the constant evolution of BR's network and infrastructure with reports on electrification progress, improved passenger facilities, system rationalisation and many other aspects of the changing fabric of the railway. Features depicting some of the trends in the pattern of BR passenger and freight traffic conclude our review of BR in 1981.
Followers of steam and the world of railway preservation will find extensive coverage of their highlights of 1981, including a striking pictorial survey of the year's more notable steam-hauled railtours.
In a year marked by the frustrating circumstances surrounding the public debut of A PT-P, the defacto end of the Deltics and the closure of the electrified Woodhead route, there has been much to report and record. Our review extends far beyond these to embrace new rolling stock, resignalling schemes, vintage carriage preservation and a host of other detailed items which all deserve mention. If in the magnitude of this task we have omitted a topic of particular importance to any reader, an apology is tendered.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
