HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Jane's World Railways is designed to give the reader data on railway equipment manufacturers and railway systems across the globe. Companion volumes are Jane's Urban Transport Systems, which gives details on metro, light rail and bus operations in the world's larger cities, and Jane's lntermodal Transportation, which covers the intermodal capabilities of railways worldwide, as well as providing details on port facilities, ocean carriers, container leasing and container handling equipment.
Jane's World Railways is divided into two sections. The first half of the book concentrates on the manufacturing industry; it is broken into a number of chapters, detailing firms active in different sectors such as locomotive manufacture, permanent way equipment and so on. At the front of each chapter are three company listings: an alphabetical listing, a listing by country, and - new to this edition - a classified listing. The classified listing allows the reader to look up firms involved in a specific activity within the section: tor example, those companies in the `Locomotives' section which undertake locomotive remanufacture.
Each entry gives details of the manufacturer including address, telephone, fax, key personnel, product information, recent contracts and, where appropriate, recent corporate developments.
The second half of the book is a country-by-country listing of the railway systems of the world. For most countries, basic data are given on the transport ministry, including key personnel and contact details. System operators then follow, with address, telephone and fax numbers, key personnel, track gauge, route length and, where appropriate, length of track electrified and electrification system.
The text description of each system is broken down into a number of standard subheadings: Political Background, Finance, Passenger Operations, Freight Operations, Intermodal Operations, New Lines, Improvements to Existing Lines, Major New Stations, Traction and Rolling Stock, Signalling and Telecommunications, Electrification and Track. At the end of the entry, motive power details are given in tables. The smaller systems do not necessarily have entries for each standard subheading, while for the larger systems the standard subheadings are broken down with italicised subheads on individual subjects.
In between the manufacturers and systems sections are sections on private freight wagon leasing companies, operators of international rail services in Europe, international railway associations and agencies, and consultancy services.
At the back of the book, the addenda lists information on companies which arrived too late for inclusion in the main section. This is followed by an index.
