A fascinating account of a man who dove into a unfamiliar industry, and with a keen sense of ingenuity, developed a prosperous business which contributed to a blossoming local economy for many years. At the heart of this enterprise, Lake County's only railroad and its rag-tag assortment of equipment, trundled through the pine covered mountains of the Mendocino National Forest.

FOREWORD AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
As the first quarter of the 20th Century was passing, California continued to perpetuate prosperity and provide to most who entered the boundaries of the Golden State, their own version of the proverbial land of "milk and honey." As the throngs of humanity settled in, would-be entrepreneurs enticed by the prospect of becoming capitalistic, influential citizens, would discover the needs of the people, seize the moment and endeavor to find a way to meet the demands. Roads, railways, telephone, water and power projects, packaging and building materials are but a few of the conveniences that are now taken for granted. But one essential resource needed to make all for-mentioned amenities possible, was massive amounts of lumber. This book attempts to tell the story of one such lumber supplier and his narrow gauge logging railroad, built not by a wealthy baron, but by a resourceful, tenacious, hard-working individual, who by gathering obsolete equipment discarded by other failed enterprises, created a prosperous business that provided employment to many and lumber to the consumer.
After discovering that such a fascinating and obscure operation as the W.W. Prather Lumber Company did indeed exist, a frantic search was begun that would satisfy this authors curiosity.
