The War of Independence in the United States changed everything in Nova Scotia. It posed a new threat of attack, which ment that the crude land routes were no longer sufficient for military purposes .
Then came the Loyalists, which started the province on towards a new age of progress, with every sign of a coming prosperity. Improvements in agriculture meant that farmers now had surplus goods which they could sell, if only adequate transportation could be provided. With contransportation, uncleared lands could be quickly settled, and the rich natural resources of Nova Scotia could be developed. Mail could be delivered with least amount of delay, just as travelling time from one point to another could be greatly reduced. The solution to all the problems was in the form of railways. As "Sam Slick" (Judge T. C. Haliburton) told his readers in 1835, a railway in an area could work a miracle, for "it is river, bridge, road and canal - all one. It saves what we haven't got to spare - men, horses, carts, vessels, barges, and what's all in all - time."
