"The tinge of iron is on the names of the places," wrote a 19th century travel guide and, as the author explains, two and a half centuries of iron mining and manufacture left an indelible mark on the hills of north central New Jersey. The Iron Mine Railroads of Northern New Jersey tells the story of the little railroads that grew up to serve the iron industry during its most productive period, went on to other activities, and eventually declined with the industry. Based on years of exhaustive research, little of which has been published before, this book is more than a railroad history. Lowenthal shows how the iron tracks influenced the land and the communities they served and the colorful people whose lives they touched in a vigorous rugged era.
