"All abo-o-a-a-r-r-d!"
It once took a lot of courage to obey that ringing command. Take the Wilson family, for example, and their first train ride. There was John Wilson, his wife Mary, and their six-year-old son Jimmy. The year was 1831, a hot morning in August.
The Wilsons in their shiny red and black buggy, drawn by a high-stepping trotting horse, rode through the streets of Albany, New York, to the starting point of the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. This was to be a great day for the city of Albany. The governor was there; so were members of the legislature in their stovepipe hats and frock coats. Farmers had driven in from miles around. When you looked at the crowd swarming around the train, it seemed that everyone was there.
