FOR something over one hundred years now the steam locomotive has been proving itself man's good friend and most faithful servant. For it was a little more than a century ago that Trevithick and Stephenson over in England began their first experiments in creating the Iron Horse. Upon the heels of these tests came the very real successes of the Rocket, the Tom Thumb, the Best Friend and the DeWitt Clinton. The last three of these early locomotives were operated right here in the United States. Swiftly the Iron Horse came to size and to importance. Devices came to increase his speed, his strength, his safety. Men like Baldwin and Norris and Hinckley and Mason worked to make the American railroad locomotive a thing of beauty as well as a machine of great energy and efficiency.
The authors have succeeded within these pages in catching much of the fine flavor and romance of the development of the Iron Horse; and without the sacrifice of accuracy at any turn. Throughout ten decades boys of all ages have been fascinated by the steam locomotive, by every detail of its construction and operation. The story of both of these phases is an endless one. Within the covers of a single book there can be told only a tithe of it a brief picture or series of pictures of its swift development. And that is the thing that here is given; thoroughly, definitely, without apology.
