This book does not set out to be a detailed, comprehensive study of model railways, of how they run, or how they are built. It has been designed with two aims in mind. The first is simply to show the newcomer the beauty and fascination of model locomotives built in an age when steam railways were at their zenith. The second is to offer him the basic information he will require should he wish to build a model railway of his own. The reader will not find in this book a step-by-step guide to making a model railway. He will, however, learn from it some of the options open to him should he decide to take up railway modelling as a hobby : what gauges, for instance, are available to him and the relative merits of each of those most widely used ; descriptions of ready-to-assemble locomotive and rolling stock kits which are on the market and how to assemble a specific locomotive kit; what goes into making a model railway really come alive and, equally important, function reliably. Finally, he will see and read what other more experienced modellers have achieved in the creation of their model railways. This is a book which can be enjoyed by those who simply wish to recall the days when; Dating ys, they spent hours  their own model railways in an attic ; by the individual who is thinking of taking up the hobby himself or who knows a young person who is, and even by the experienced modeller who can appreciate the expert skill which goes into a perfectly modelled locomotive or who is interested in examining what others have accomplished with their model layouts.
