International Model Railways Guide HO 78/79 More than 4000 models in color Hard Cover 1978 385 pages
The secret be at first given away to all who suspect something else: This book was not financed by funds of the industry. No one of the model railway manufacturers entered in the editorial section did pay a cent for the representation of his products. But most firms were fond of my idea of making a book to specify in all the HO scale model railway vehicles available in the world market. And they supported me in an appropriate manner. There were, however, a lot of sceptics questioning if I would ever succeed in getting all these models before my camera. Defying them, the first edition lies on the table now.
Nearly all manufacturers of the known makes placed their models at my disposal for photographing. In few cases the models had to be procured from the specialized trade with the publishers' support. Result: With few exceptions. which can be certainly got over. I could collect the whole world programme of HO scale series vehicles and, moreover, give a representing survey of limited series models and model railway kits. Altogether there are more than 4000 models.
The sceptics' second question was, "Will such a book even be bought since each of the great manufacturers will issue his own catalogue every year?" This fact didn't either oppose my consideration. For only quite the "great" ones can afford catalogues in so high a circulation to serve every interested party with a copy. But how many medium and small manufacturers have attractive and respectable models and dispose at best of small folder circulations with often very poor unicoloured illustrations? In many cases, the few copies hardly suffice to cover the requirements of the trade and disappear underneath the counter. Moreover - and that is right also for the catalogues of the great ones - the pictures don't show exactly the original models. because retouched photos are still in use as printing patterns.
On the contrary, the pictures in this book are all reproductions from unretouched colour slides taken with a special camera on professional films. All models were photographed under the same lighting conditions and most of them, if it was possible, in the same angle position. It is possible but by this kind of representation to give an objective opinion on the shown models. So far the manufacturers' catalogues cannot be regarded as business rivals to this book and vice versa. This finally also results from the different objects in view. The manufacturers' catalogues are made as selling aids in sales promotion aspects. This book on the other hand helps to the independent market information.
This first edition comes out in three languages. To spare space with this. I took some symbols for the recurrent specifications of the illustrations. They are easy to remember.
The arrangement is made after manufacturers in alphabetical order and then listed as engines. goods wagons, and passenger cars. Further there are informations about the producers themselves, the programmes, systems, specialities, and representations. Model railway accessories, however. were only included in the range the concerned manufacturers were interested to be represented with some of their products and brief informations about the enterprise.
So this probably unique standard work should meet its friends. both as a reference book with the international specialized trade and as a compilation for model railway collectors and amateurs throughout the world.
