COVER STORY
8   The New Marine Corps The post-Vietnam malaise is a thing of the past. Under the dynamic leadership of Gen. Al Gray, the Marines have retooled themselves into a highly motivated force. The new doctrine: maneuver warfare, an idea that calls for fast reflexes in hitting the enemy at his weakest point. The big question: How to institutionalize the changes?
12   Hard at Work The new Corps emphasizes that every Marine is a fighting Marine. That has meant augmenting training and an effort to bring such exercises more into line with the realities the Marines will face in combat. The troops seem to like it.
14   Fighting Smarter For the Marines, the days of the amphibious landing, storming the beaches, are about over. The Corps is preparing to address itself to an array of specialized missions. The major guidepost is a slim new manual called "Warfighting," which lays out Gen. Gray's style.
17   Restructured and Ready Through a number of slick organizational moves, Gray has created a Corps that isn't dependent on mobilizing reserves to start fighting. The issue is whether he can maintain that capacity in an age of military budget cuts.
