India is a land of temples ands skyscrapers, of ox power and space exploration. On its railways, tiny narrow gauge steam engines take all day to travel fifty miles, whilst on its main broad gauge lines, powerful electric locomotives haul twenty-four or more coaches across the sub-continent.
This is just some of the magic awaiting the visitor. The people are exceptionally friendly, the weather is delightful (at least in the winter) and much of the scenery is awe-inspiring. Its bureaucracy, instigated by the British, has been raised to new heights, and seems designed to frustrate the visitor, but there is always someone who will find a way round the problem "just for you, sahib"! It is a magical holiday destination, especially for the photographer. Whichever way one turns, there is an image worth recording, whether the high Himalayan mountains against a deep blue sky, the face of a wrinkled peddler in Rajasthan, or work worn (but still working) British built Edwardian steam locomotives in Gwalior. These, and many more, are all here.
There is an undeniable magic about India; after one's first visit it comes as a great relief to return to what is regarded as Western civilisation. However, such is the fascination that it is rarely more than a couple of months before the planning of the next trip commences. The country has given all three of us so much pleasure that we feel that the charms of the country, its people and its railways are worthy of a wider audience.
Any visitor to the country will have heard the expression `honoured guest': in India, this really has some meaning. It is the small courtesies that we remember - fellow passengers buying us cups of tea and maybe offering overnight accommodation, or a locomotive shed manager having his oldest engines moved from deep recesses of his shed into the sunlight for photography.
A reviewer might well say that we have crowded this book with pictures. Having experienced the rush hour on the Bombay suburban trains, we can only say that it fits the impression!
