INTRODUCTION
The 1982 INDEX TO HOW TO DO IT INFORMATION is our twentieth annual edition. What began in 1963 as an index to nine magazines has expanded to include fifty nine different magazines which regularly feature "how-to" articles (see complete list beginning at the bottom of this page).
The major areas of emphasis represented by these magazines include: ARTS & CRAFTS, ASTRONOMY, AUTOMOBILES, BOATS, COMPUTERS, ELECTRONICS, FIBER ARTS, FURNITURE, HI-FI & STEREO, HOBBIES, HOUSE & HOME, LAPIDARY, PHOTOGRAPHY- RADIO, SPORTS, TELEVISION, TOOLS, TOYS and WOODWORKING.
The 1982 INDEX is arranged in alphabetical order according to the subjects covered in each "how-to" article. "See" and "see also" cross references within the body of the index (pages 1-128) direct the user to the appropriate subject heading where desired information will be found.
Following each subject heading. the entries are arranged in alphabetical order according to magazine name. Within each magazine, the entries are arranged in chronological order by date of the magazine. Each entry consists of a descriptive statement about the article, followed by the citation (name of magazine, date, page number) where the article will be found.
During the course of indexing, unique words or phrases emerge. These "keywords" are often too specific to be used as subject headings or cross references, but still could be very useful in locating a specific article. A separate KEYWORD GUIDE (pages 129-136) indicates under which subject heading an entry appears that contains a unique word or phrase. No attempt is made to edit the "keywords" for uniformity of style, content or completeness. Some "keywords" may subsequently even be adopted as regular subject headings and/or cross references.
