The Magazines
This is what I hope will be the first index of a series. The magazines covered in this first volume were taken largely from my own library, and the libraries of a few friends, and therefore there are a few gaps (see page 9). I have written to the relevant magazines I have located (some 91 as of this writing) about exchanging a complimentary subscription for guaranteed inclusion in future volumes and some have been kind enough to accept this cooperative arrangement. While I so far have contacted only English language ones, I would be glad to include any in any language.
The requirements for inclusion of a magazine are simple: (a) it must be available, through either subscription or membership in an open organization, to any modeler with the requisite fee; (b) it must include in every issue scale drawings, color schemes, technique articles, or product reviews of direct use to modelers; and (c) it must strive for accuracy in its coverage. (This last point, as far as I have found, excludes only a certain California firm with heavy newsstand sales that is noted for its multiplicity of titles and its habit of stealing material from individuals and other publications, as well as its total unreliability for accuracy. ) Reputable magazines are welcome and will be included in future volumes.
Kinds of Information Not Indexed
Because of their limited usefulness and because this
Index must be kept to a manageable size, the following items or categories in the magazines covered are not indexed:
(1) House organ material. The internal workings of organizations are of major concern to those in the organizations, but to few others.
(2) Coverage of contests, exhibitions, military exercises, rallies, etc. Coverage of most major modeling events is generally published three or four months after the event, while prototype activities are covered (if at all) one to two years after.
(3) Notice of new products not in the nature of a review. There are too many for their lasting value. IPMS-UK has an excellent directory, "Scale Plastic Kits of the World" published by MAP, for this area of modeling and it is hoped that other organizations would do analogous directories for flying models, metal figures, etc.
(4) Reviews of magazines. Because of the time-lag between the publication of the review and the publication of the next volume of this index, these will be too outdated to be of value since magazines change over the years far more than other products.
(5) Decal reviews. They are often updated because of reviewer criticism and few of them have been more than an elaborate notice of new products since they generally go into details of the contents, rather than accuracy, quality of register, adhesion, thickness, etc.
(6) Editorials. Editorials should speak to a matter of immediate concern and therefore will become dated by the time-lag. If not, they will be considered an article regardless of label and indexed accordingly.
(7) Regular columns which cover or touch on a number of items, or articles or pages of miscellaneous tips and hints on a wide variety of subjects. Occasionally some items will have enough significance to be extracted, but generally the brevity of the piece works against it.
(8) Plans which do not include enough material for an expert modeler to build a model. The borderline here is in flying models which take up about two or three column inches. If the airfoil and the basic structure are included, they are indexed with the notation "sp" (small plan); if not, they are omitted.
(9) Book reviews of items of fiction. There is enough of a problem in classifying material for reference without trying to pigeon-hole novels as well. While interesting escape, they are seldom of direct value to the modeler.
(10) Letters to the editor unless offering corrections or additions to previously published articles or other generally useful information. The criterion here is: if it were in the main text of the publication, would it be considered an article or filler?
(11) Requests for information unless accompanied by an answer of sufficient scope to have otherwise warranted indexing.
(12) Photographs. There are two problems here. First, the problem of identifying accurately the large number of uncaptioned photos in model magazines. Second, that of space (and thus cost); an index of photos would be about the same size as this index. Anyone capable of the task is welcome to it. Photo-essays of at least one full page, covering one specific subject, are indexed and photos accompanying scale drawings are noted in the drawing reference.
(13) Ads. With the rare exception of those containing material which would otherwise warrant indexing.
(14) Reviews of die-cast cars and similar items directed at the collector rather than modeler.
(15) Wargame rules reviews. Although the wargames themselves and background books directed primarily at wargamers are covered, the problem of space again precludes coverage of items not directed at modelers.
