INTRODUCTION
If an urban rail rapid transit system never earned an operating profit, it would still pay for itself many times over, through it's beneficial impact alone on real estate values and increased assessments. Rail rapid transit creates and enhances property like nothing else on earth. Over the last few years, in no small part due to the energy crises and augmented metropolitan traffic congestions, much money and talent has been expended in the creation and development of new systems as well as improvement of existing rail rapid transit systems. A new phenomenon during this time has been the creation of the light rail vehicle.
Underwriting massive capital cost burdens usually in the billions of dollars for these systems, except for smaller light rail systems, the U.S. Federal Government has subsidized up to eighty percent of the cost with State County or municipal governments covering the balance. As a result, simply great systems and state-of-the-art cars have appeared.
This book has concentrated on coverage of cities, in alphabetical order, with condensed histories, statistics and rosters of subway or light rail vehicles with useful data and a system map of operations showing stations. This is followed by professional large-format photographs, second-to-none, representing some of the fastest, most comfortable and aestetically beautiful cars and vehicles in unobstructed views.
