INTRODUCTION
This publication has attempted to show the 110 very best representative professional builders photographs in full-page size, covering steam and diesel-electric locomotives over the past 50 illustrious years of locomotive production in Montreal.
Most of these photographs are from the personal collection of James W. Kerr, and were acquired over a 30 year period, reflecting some of the most beautiful and powerful steam and diesel-electric locomotives operated in this Country and in a greater way, the North American Continent.
Briefly, MLW built over 4000 steam locomotives from 1904 to 1949, from small 0-4-0 tank types to the massive 2-10-4 Selkirks of Canadian Pacific, said to be the most powerful in the British Commonwealth. After 1948, diesel-electric units were built. A total of over 3000 diesel-electric locomotives, for domestic and international markets, were assembled.
Bombardier assumed control in 1975, and is one of the three largest locomotive builders in North America.
This is laid out representing the Canadian domestic market, in alphabetical order of the largest railways, steam locomotives preceding diesel-electrics, followed by shorter railways, with every locomotive, listed in ascending numerical order. The LRC locomotives are located at the back of the book.
