With the 1849 discovery of gold in California the narrow curve of the Isthmus of Panama became an avenue of adventurous passage between the great oceans. For more than five years travellers bound for California braved disease-ridden jungles in their crossing of the Isthmus for passage up the West Coast. In January 1855 the first train made the coast-to-coast crossing, and a new era dawned. Swift and safe passage was now assured.
The story of the building of the Panama Railroad is an epic in the history of transportation, and this small book was the first to outline the story behind the feat. Published in 1862 by Harper and Brothers, this volume has long been sought by both collectors of Railroadiana and Western Americana. Augmented with wood-block engravings, this book tells in word and picture the dreams, drama and the final accomplishments of John L. Stephens and William Aspinwall, the promoters of the Panama Railroad.
