I readily admit that this book strays a little beyond the true geographical confines of Exmoor. Nevertheless, I hope this does not detract from a modest look at the railways of one of the South West's most attractive corners. This book devotes a separate section to each of the area's five railway lines and, fortunately for the sake of variety, no less than four different railway companies were involved in their development. All five lines have previously been well documented elsewhere, and so this book is NOT an attempt to provide further allegedly-definitive histories. That said, considerable primary source research has been undertaken in an effort to come up with something a little different, and it is hoped that the end result provides a brief - and sometimes off-beat insight into contemporary railway operations in the West Somerset and North Devon areas.
A look at the railways of one of the South West's most attractive corners, though it ranges a little beyond the true geographical confines. The book devotes a separate section to each of the area's five railway lines, Barnstaple - Ilfracombe, Barnstaple - Taunton, Taunton - Minehead, Lynton and Barnstaple and the ancient West Somerset Mineral Railway. Considerable primary source research has been undertaken in an effort to come up with something a little different and it is hoped that the end result provides a concise, and occasionally offbeat, insight into railway operations in West Somerset and North Devon.
