DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The existence of the complex missile systems now available to the military powers of the world is a fact that overshadows the life of all of us. Guided weapons are central to practically every area of military strategic and tactical thinking, and if the nuclear war that we all dread is ever loosed upon the globe, missiles will deliver the deadly warheads. However, despite its enormous significance, the field of guided rocket and missile technology has until now been strangely neglected by military analysts. This book sets out to fill the Op - the entire history of these weapons is accurately charted, and each system succinctly evaluated.
The book is divided into eleven sections, according to the missile's function and deployment, and each section is preceded by an essay which outlines the development of the weapon type. A special feature is an eight-page fold-out on pages 10-17 which explains graphically the history of ICBMs, the missions that missiles are now capable of flying, and details of guidance, propulsion, launch techniques and methods of control. The actual missile entries are arranged chronologically by nation within each section, and they are illustrated by a superb variety of color and black and white photographs, including shots of manufacture, launch and target-kill, cutaway and profile drawings and line diagrams. However, Bill Gunston offers the reader much more than just a catalog of weaponry. His masterly overview enables him to set the history of guided missiles in perspective, to assess the decisions of the past in the light of the contemporary military balance, and, in the course of this appraisal, to come to some chilling conclusions about the future security of the West.
The diversity of the systems featured is truly staggering - from man-portable anti-tank missiles to vast ICBMs; from the primitive remotely-piloted aircraft of the inter-war years to the devastating Phoenix which enables one F-14 Tomcat to destroy six independent targets at a range of over 100 miles. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of The World's Rockets and Missiles will indeed be the most comprehensively detailed and colorfully illustrated book ever to appear on this fascinating subject.
