Over the past 130 years some 70 Illinois cities built or at last planned street railways and 39 interurban systems were put in operation. The following pages comprise a concise history of these systems, providing basic data for each company: dates opened and closed or sold, basic mileage, simplified rolling stock notes, etc. City systems are arranged by city (in alphabetical order), then chronologically by company, while interurbans are in simple alphabetical order. Wherever possible, basic data is also provided for unbuilt companies as well as operating systems. Some biographical data is provided for major Illinois traction builders and larger utility holding companies. As each system is first listed, dates of incorporation and amount of capital stock are listed in parentheses. Data is as up-to-date as possible, considering that two systems are still operating (CTA and South Shore). Basic sources of information, not listed in the individual footnotes, are the utility manuals, railway and financial periodicals, reports of federal and state agencies listed in the bibliography, plus two books: George Hilton & John Due, Electric Interurban Railways in America and the CERA Bulletin 99: Smaller Electric Lines of Illinois.
